NEW YORK -- Hess and Chevron announced that the Tubular Bells field in deepwater Gulf of Mexico has started crude oil and natural gas production. The field is located 135 mi southeast of New Orleans, in approximately 4,300 ft of water in the Mississippi Canyon area. The discovery well was drilled in 2003, and project construction began in October 2011.

ZUG, Switzerland (Bloomberg) -- Transocean Ltd., the largest owner of deepwater drilling rigs, reported a third-quarter loss of $6.12 per share after taking one-time charges of $2.57 billion related to the value of its fleet. Transocean delayed publishing its earnings last week after announcing the writedowns, prompted by a slowdown in oil exploration after this year’s decline in crude prices.

ABERDEEN, United Kingdom -- Churchill Drilling Tools, the provider of innovative dart activated drilling tools, has launched the HyPR (Hydraulic Pipe Recovery) system for the rapid and cost-effective recovery of stuck pipe. Stuck pipe situations cost operators hundreds of millions of dollars a year in wait times. The HyPR tool, developed by the Houston and Aberdeen-located company, can cut that cost significantly by enabling operators to get back on track much more quickly.
