New rig's raising system enables drill floor and mast to be raised in one operation

Vol. 229 No. 12   New Rig Design New rig’s raising system enables drill floor and mast to be raised in one operation Verist

Veristic Technologies’ new Rocket Rig was designed to simplify the rig-up process, Fig. 1. Its main design features include a ground-level horizontal assembly for the entire mast, substructure and drill floor. The mast and entire drill floor can be raised to working height in a single operation with the Dog-Tail raising system. This system is built in to the substructure with hydraulic winches, sheaves and wirelines. The raising system stays inside the substructure during the rig move.

The mast lifting line can be strung up easily and safely because it runs from pin to pin without stringing through break-over sheaves inside the mast as in conventional rigs. All mast pedestals are under the drill floor inside the substructure near ground level for better stability and less vibration at the drill floor. The mast, drill floor and substructure components are designed for transportation without further disassembling. The crown block is designed to position both fast line and dead line at the back, outside of the mast to minimize interference with the working space inside the mast.

The mast top section is designed to combine the crown block, traveling block, top drive and guide rail for transportation in a single unit. A hydraulically powered wire spooler with a high-torque motor ca help string up the drill line quickly and safely. The new rig’s drawworks support is at truck-bed height at the rear end of the substructure for easy rig-up. Its drill floor will support NOV’s ST-80 Iron Roughneck and other drill floor equipment. All installed equipment can stay on the drill floor section during rig move. There is also a provision for hydraulic leveling jacks at each mast leg above the drill floor.

The new rig is designed for 12 truck loads during rig mobilization:

  • Substructure (DS), mast starter section and raising system
  • Substructure (ODS), mast starter section and raising system
  • Spreader, PWS
  • Spreader, HPU
  • Drill floor, setback
  • Drill floor, rotary (built-in rotary table by customer)
  • Support, driller cabin (built-in driller cabin by customer)
  • Foundation, drawworks (drawworks by customer)
  • Strong-back crossover
  • Mast, lower section with CSB
  • Mast, mid section with racking board
  • Mast, top section with crown. WO
