Coming In August 2003. . .

Now in its 58th year, World Oil's International Outlook Issue is an industry standard. Twice a year, World Oil sends out more than 2,000 surveys to state and federal agencies, oil companies and other organizations on an international scale. The data that result are unique, independent, and often cited by agencies such as EIA, the World Almanac, DeGolyer & McNaughton, and others.

Eight world regions (North America, South America, Western Europe, Eastern Europe/FSU, Africa, Middle East, Far East and South Pacific) will be overviewed, covering important developments that include changes in governmental policy, exploration and development activity, oil production data, gas and oil reserves, number of wells drilled, drilling footage, types of wells drilled, field-discovery tables and licensing information, and other data gathered from countries and oil companies throughout the world. It's the type of information that companies need to know to ask deeper questions and make sound business decisions as to whether and how they might operate in a given country.

In an expanded section on the Former Soviet Union, Doing business in Russia -2003. A partner in the Litigation Group of Dewey Ballantine LLP, New York, handicaps the state of Russian law for direct foreign investment in light of BP's recent investment in TNK. This includes a look at progress (or lack thereof) in passing a production sharing contract law, as well as legal protections for foreign entities entering JVs with Russian firms. Many in the West are reassessing Russian companies as strategic partners, particularly given continued uncertainty in the Middle East.

Field applications of a new one-trip gravel pack system. BJ Services describes the development and early application of this new, more cost-effective sand control system. This unique system eliminates the workstring, washpipe and conventional crossover tool. On three Gulf of Mexico wells, savings relative to conventional systems averaged $250,000 and operational time was cut 40%. This can help bring smaller reservoirs into economic development.

Deploying and placing gravel packs on coiled tubing and jointed pipe. Thru-Tubing Systems, Inc., reports on this system, which is especially suited for use in low-BHP or live-well applications.

Running prepacked screens on wireline. . A consultant for Continental Specialties discusses when, and how, to apply the technique.

arrow Petroleum Technology Diges

World Oil's regular monthly feature is published in association with the Petroleum Technology Transfer Council. This month's case study shows how A two-piece, flow-thru plunger offers benefits for unloading gas wells. Operator ChevronTexaco describes how the production technology virtually eliminates the shut-in time required for a traditional plunger and why fewer liquids are forced back into the formation. In one well, $1,740 per month of chemical costs were eliminated while production increased. In a 10-well program in West Texas, production increased 1.2 MMcfd.
