NOV Tuboscope launches coating solution to protect drilling tools against harsh environments

November 15, 2024

NOV’s Tuboscope division has recently unveiled a new advancement in tubular internal coating technology, aimed at significantly reducing thermal conductivity and enhancing operational efficiency and longevity of drilling tool life in challenging environments. As drilling operations continue to confront the rigors of extreme subsurface conditions, such as high temperatures, this leads to costly tool repairs, escalated periods of downtime and reduced asset life.

In a strategic move to address these issues, NOV Tuboscope has introduced their latest innovation, TK-Drakōn, a robust insulating coating engineered to fortify drilling tools against the harsh realities of drilling operations in high temperature environments. TK-Drakōn represents a fusion of NOV Tuboscope's expertise in pipe coating technology with cutting-edge advancements in materials science. This new coating features remarkably low thermal conductivity properties, a first of its kind, pioneering a new industry standard.

The TK-Drakōn coating provides exceptional resistance against corrosion, abrasion, and chemical interactions, sharing the same performance features of their market leading drill pipe coatings. Additionally, the innovative insulating properties of the coating enable operators to better maintain fluid temperatures within the pipes and down to the drill bit, keeping bottomhole assembly (BHA) tools cooler and running longer. The enhanced hydraulic efficiency not only reduces energy consumption but also minimizes the environmental footprint of drilling activities.

By integrating these high-performance characteristics, TK-Drakōn allows drilling operators to extend the service life of their equipment, reduce downtime, and achieve higher operational efficiencies. This development underscores NOV Tuboscope's commitment to pioneering solutions that meet the evolving needs of the oil and gas industry, enhancing both the effectiveness and sustainability of drilling operations.
