Eni awarded deepwater exploration acreage offshore Gambia

June 07, 2026

(WO) — Eni has entered Gambia's upstream sector after signing a petroleum exploration, development and production license agreement for offshore Block A1 with the Government of The Gambia.

The agreement was signed by Gambia's Minister of Energy and Petroleum, Nani Juwara, and grants Eni exploration rights to the deepwater block, which covers approximately 1,300 sq km offshore the West African nation.

Block A1 lies in water depths ranging from 1,250 m to 3,300 m and is located within the Atlantic Margin, a region that has attracted growing industry interest following a series of hydrocarbon discoveries in recent years.

The award marks Eni's first entry into Gambia and expands the company's exploration footprint in West Africa.

Eni said the license aligns with its strategy of building a geographically diversified exploration portfolio that includes proven hydrocarbon provinces, emerging basins and frontier areas with significant resource potential.

The company noted that Block A1 is situated in an underexplored portion of the Atlantic Margin with demonstrated hydrocarbon potential, offering opportunities for future exploration activity.
