Trump threatens strikes on Iran's Kharg Island oil export hub

June 11, 2026

(Bloomberg) — President Donald Trump threatened additional military action against Iran on Thursday and suggested the U.S. could eventually target key Iranian oil export infrastructure, including Kharg Island, the country's primary crude export terminal.

Trump said the United States would strike Iran again following the collapse of a two-month ceasefire over the weekend. In a post on social media, he also raised the prospect of taking control of Kharg Island and other energy infrastructure assets, a move that would mark a significant escalation in the conflict.

Kharg Island is the cornerstone of Iran's oil export system and handles the majority of the country's crude shipments. Any disruption to operations at the terminal could have significant implications for global oil supplies and energy markets.

“The United States will be hitting Iran very hard tonight,” Trump wrote, while also stating that the U.S. could eventually assume control of Kharg Island and other oil infrastructure.

The comments come as tensions between Washington and Tehran continue to escalate following renewed military exchanges. A ceasefire that had largely held since April collapsed after Iran downed a U.S. military helicopter, triggering retaliatory strikes by both sides.

Analysts have warned that any direct action against Iranian export infrastructure would represent a major escalation beyond efforts to restrict shipping and could further complicate prospects for a negotiated settlement.

Kharg Island has become increasingly important to global oil markets during the conflict, as traders closely monitor the potential impact on Iranian crude exports and regional supply flows.

Trump's latest remarks underscore the continued uncertainty surrounding both the conflict and the future of oil exports from the Persian Gulf, one of the world's most critical energy-producing regions.
