Scottish offshore robotics firm targets naval subsea security sector

(WO) — Rovtech Solutions has signed a strategic collaboration agreement with Australian maritime services company Franmarine aimed at expanding deployment of its VALOR remotely operated vehicle (ROV) platform into defense and maritime security applications.

The agreement was announced during the Indian Ocean Defence & Security Conference in Perth, Australia, where the Aberdeen-developed VALOR system is being showcased with an integrated mine countermeasure configuration.

Originally designed for offshore oil and gas inspection and intervention work, the VALOR platform is being positioned for applications including subsea infrastructure protection, underwater surveillance and mine countermeasure operations.

The companies said the collaboration aligns with growing international interest in unmanned maritime systems and remote subsea operations, including initiatives associated with the AUKUS defense partnership.

The modular ROV platform can be deployed from both conventional vessels and unmanned surface vessels, enabling remote subsea inspection and intervention while reducing personnel exposure in hazardous environments.

One of the targeted applications is naval mine detection and support for mine neutralization activities, allowing operators to conduct missions remotely rather than deploying personnel directly into high-risk areas.

“This is a major milestone for Rovtech and a hugely exciting opportunity for technology developed in Scotland,” said John Polson, chief executive officer of Rovtech Solutions.

“VALOR was created to solve complex challenges in demanding offshore energy environments, but the same capabilities are becoming increasingly important within defense and maritime security.”

Franmarine brings established relationships across allied naval organizations, including the Royal Australian Navy, Royal Navy and United States Navy, creating potential pathways for future deployment of the technology in sovereign maritime security programs.

The companies said they will jointly pursue opportunities related to mine countermeasures, subsea inspection, underwater surveillance and protection of critical offshore infrastructure.

The agreement comes as governments and defense organizations increase investment in subsea monitoring and infrastructure security amid growing concern over threats to offshore energy assets, communications networks and maritime transportation routes.

Rovtech and its VALOR platform were recently acquired by Ventex, a venture studio focused on technologies supporting the energy transition.
