Legacy offshore fields drive Congo production growth
(WO) — Mature offshore fields in the Republic of Congo are seeing renewed production optimization efforts as independent operators expand investment in brownfield redevelopment projects.
Ammat Global Resources has increased production capacity at the offshore Loango and Zatchi fields through a series of workovers, infrastructure upgrades and reservoir management initiatives aimed at slowing natural decline rates and improving operational efficiency.
According to the company, upgrades to electrical submersible pumping systems and subsea infrastructure have helped lift combined production capacity from approximately 4,000 bopd to 7,000 bopd across the two mature offshore assets.
The company said modernization work has included improvements to flow assurance systems and upgrades linking offshore platforms to the main treatment hub to reduce bottlenecks and support more stable throughput.
Rather than focusing on large frontier exploration campaigns, the redevelopment strategy has centered on rehabilitation of existing offshore infrastructure and optimization of producing wells.
The Republic of Congo has continued pursuing higher offshore production levels as part of broader efforts to support government revenues and maintain its position among regional oil producers.
Ammat has also expanded associated gas utilization efforts at the Loango hub, where gas is increasingly being redirected to onsite power generation systems to reduce diesel consumption and limit routine flaring.
NJ Ayuk, executive chairman of the African Energy Chamber, said mature offshore fields continue offering opportunities for production growth through operational improvements and infrastructure upgrades.
“Africa’s energy future will not be built solely on new discoveries in frontier basins,” Ayuk said. “It will be built by unlocking the full potential of existing assets.”
Across Africa, several international operators have continued divesting mature offshore assets, creating additional opportunities for smaller independent companies to acquire and redevelop producing fields.
Ayuk added that mature offshore fields should not be viewed as liabilities “but opportunities waiting to be optimized.”
The developments offshore Congo highlight increasing industry focus on brownfield optimization and mature asset management as operators seek lower-cost pathways to maintain or expand production levels.
