Decom Engineering secures U.S. patent for subsea cutting technology

(WO) — Decom Engineering has secured a U.S. patent covering key elements of its proprietary Chopsaw cutting technology, supporting its position in subsea cutting and offshore decommissioning applications.

Decom Engineering Chopsaw technology deployed offshore Brazil

The patent protects a combination of mechanical and operational features, including a linear-drive cutting system, modular drive configuration and adaptable clamping design. The technology is intended to improve cutting precision, control and safety across a range of offshore and onshore uses.

At the center of the system is a linear-drive cutting head that feeds the blade directly into the material, rather than relying on a pivoting motion. This approach allows for more consistent engagement and cleaner cuts, particularly in complex subsea environments.

The modular drive arrangement integrates the motor, blade and drive components into a single assembly that can be removed or replaced on site, enabling faster maintenance and reconfiguration during operations. The system also features adaptable clamping, allowing a single unit to handle varying diameters and materials, including conductors, mooring chains and umbilicals.

By clamping above and below the cut line, the system creates a more stable, tension-free cutting zone—an important factor when working on subsea infrastructure.

“Our aim has always been to develop cutting technology that is robust, adaptable and capable of performing in the most challenging environments,” said Managing Director Nick McNally. “The patent is important for safeguarding our leading position in the cutting market and reinforces our ability to protect our engineering advantage.”

Decom said additional patent applications covering the technology are progressing in multiple international jurisdictions.
