(WO) - Odfjell Drilling has suspended operations on the Deepsea Atlantic rig after a blowout preventer (BOP) was dropped to the seabed during handling operations offshore.

The incident occurred April 18 while running the BOP, which fell to an approximate depth of 1,100 m. No injuries were reported, and the rig remains secure, the company said. Recovery operations are underway, and an investigation has been launched to determine the cause.

BOP handling is among the most complex phases of offshore drilling, requiring precise coordination of heavy subsea equipment under high loads. Failures during deployment can result in significant operational delays and recovery challenges, particularly in deepwater environments.

Drilling activities will remain suspended until the BOP is recovered and any necessary repairs are completed.
