Petrobras confirms oil discovery in mature Campos basin pre-salt play

March 26, 2026

(WO) - Petrobras has confirmed a new oil discovery in the pre-salt section of the Campos basin, identifying hydrocarbons in an exploratory well drilled in the Marlim Sul field offshore Brazil

Well 3-BRSA-1397-RJS, located approximately 113 km offshore Campos dos Goytacazes in water depth of 1,178 m, encountered oil-bearing intervals confirmed through wireline logs, gas shows and fluid sampling. Initial indications point to high-quality crude, with samples now undergoing laboratory analysis to further characterize reservoir properties and fluid composition.

The discovery supports Petrobras’ strategy to unlock additional resources in mature offshore basins, where existing infrastructure and geological knowledge can accelerate development timelines and improve project economics.

The Campos basin, one of Brazil’s most established producing regions, has seen renewed exploration focus as operators target deeper pre-salt intervals beneath legacy fields. The Marlim Sul area, originally discovered in 1987, continues to offer upside potential through advanced drilling and reservoir evaluation techniques.

Petrobras, which holds a 100% stake and operates the field, said the well was drilled safely and in compliance with environmental standards. Further studies will determine the commercial viability of the discovery and guide next steps for appraisal and potential development.

The find highlights ongoing opportunities to extend the life of mature offshore assets while contributing to Brazil’s broader reserve replacement efforts.
