BOEM releases Arctic offshore seismic data from Beaufort Sea OCS leases
(WO) - The U.S. Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) has released five legacy 3D seismic survey datasets covering portions of the Beaufort Sea, expanding public access to offshore Arctic geologic data that could support future exploration and energy planning in Alaska’s Outer Continental Shelf (OCS).
The datasets, now available through the National Archive of Marine Seismic Surveys, encompass five geological and geophysical (G&G) permits and include 10 original or reprocessed SEG-Y files across nine survey areas. Together, the surveys cover approximately 232 square miles of Beaufort Sea lease areas.
BOEM’s Alaska OCS Region said the release follows the expiration of the data’s 25-year proprietary confidentiality period. Under federal regulations, geophysical data collected by private operators must be submitted to BOEM and remain confidential for a set period before being eligible for public release.
“Making these legacy seismic datasets publicly available reflects our continued commitment to scientific integrity, transparency and responsible energy development,” said Mick Bradway, acting director of BOEM’s Alaska Outer Continental Shelf Region.
The newly available datasets — identified as B-01-95-AK, B-03-96-AK, B-04-97-AK, B-05-98-AK and B-02-99-AK — provide 3D subsurface imaging across portions of the Beaufort Sea, an area that has long been considered prospective for hydrocarbons but remains lightly developed relative to other U.S. offshore basins.
Access to reprocessed and original seismic data may allow operators, geoscientists and academic researchers to re-evaluate structural and stratigraphic features using modern interpretation workflows. Advances in seismic processing, inversion and attribute analysis could yield new insights from legacy datasets originally acquired in the 1990s.
The National Archive of Marine Seismic Surveys is a collaborative initiative between BOEM and the U.S. Geological Survey, providing a centralized platform for public access to marine seismic data collected by or submitted to agencies within the U.S. Department of the Interior.
BOEM said additional legacy seismic datasets are expected to be released on a rolling basis as confidentiality periods expire.
The Beaufort Sea is part of Alaska’s federal OCS planning area, where resource potential has historically been balanced against environmental, logistical and regulatory considerations. While no near-term lease sales have been announced, expanded access to subsurface data could inform long-term Arctic energy assessments and future offshore decision-making.
