Energy NL remembers Ocean Ranger offshore disaster 44 years later

February 17, 2026

Energy NL is marking the anniversary of the Ocean Ranger disaster, remembering the 84 crew members who lost their lives when the semisubmersible drilling rig sank offshore Newfoundland in February 1982.

The Ocean Ranger semi-submersible drilling rig, which sank on Feb. 15, 1982, off the coast of Newfoundland’s Grand Banks, leading to the loss of all 84 crew members and prompting sweeping changes to offshore safety standards worldwide.

The Ocean Ranger capsized during a severe winter storm on Feb. 15, 1982, while operating on the Grand Banks. All 84 personnel onboard were killed, making it one of the deadliest offshore drilling accidents in history.

Industry organizations say the tragedy marked a turning point for offshore safety regulation and operational practices. Subsequent investigations led to significant changes in emergency procedures, training standards and safety requirements for offshore installations in Canada and globally.

“It has been 44 years since the loss of 84 crew members of the Ocean Ranger and their legacy remains as clear now as it was that stormy February day in 1982,” said Charlene Johnson, CEO of Energy NL. “While the resulting actions to enhance offshore safety can never bring back the 84 men lost on the Ocean Ranger, a world-leading safety regime has improved the working conditions of everyone who has come after them. By remembering their loss and committing to a safety-oriented offshore, we pay tribute to those 84 lives lost and remember the family and friends that love them so.”

Energy NL said the anniversary serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining strong safety standards across offshore operations and honoring the legacy of those who lost their lives. The organization represents more than 500 member companies across the energy supply and service sector, including offshore operations, engineering, safety and emerging energy technologies.
