Kongsberg Maritime awarded deck machinery contract for new floating wind vessel
(WO) - Kongsberg Maritime has secured a contract to supply deck machinery for a next-generation floating wind construction vessel (FWCV) being built for Hana Shipping, marking one of the first major FWCV newbuild awards globally in recent years.
The 127-m vessel is scheduled for delivery in July 2027 and will support construction activities at the Ulsan Floating Wind Farm, located about 70 km offshore South Korea. Designed by Focal, the vessel will be used for mooring installation, towing, cable laying and other offshore construction tasks associated with floating wind developments.
Under the contract, Kongsberg Maritime will deliver a comprehensive deck machinery package centered on anchor handling and towing operations. The scope includes a 500-tonne main towing and anchor-handling winch system with three drums, secondary winches for rope installation, tugger winches, an active heave-compensated working winch, and the Towcon X8 control system. The package also incorporates rope tensioning equipment, air compressors and associated control infrastructure.
The company said it was involved early in the vessel’s design phase, allowing deck machinery systems to be integrated to meet the operational requirements of large-scale floating wind installation. Mechanical components for the main winches will be manufactured by Norwegian partner IP Huse, while hydraulic motors are being produced at Kongsberg Maritime’s facility in Brattvåg, Norway.
The contract also includes two newly developed systems for large anchor handling and mooring vessels: an updated Shark Jaw chain handling system, designed to accommodate chain sizes up to 220 mm, and AH100 rail-mounted cranes with increased load capacity and extended reach. The cranes feature dual-arm configurations and interchangeable tooling to support offshore installation work.
While floating wind projects remain at an early stage globally, the award reflects growing demand for specialized offshore vessels and equipment capable of supporting deepwater and harsh-environment installation campaigns.
