Three total fatalities reported from Chevron Angola platform fire

(Bloomberg) -- Two workers injured in a May 20 fire on a Chevron Corp. oil platform off the coast of Angola have died. The fire occurred on the cellar deck of CABGOC’s Benguela Belize Lobito Tomboco (BBLT) deepwater facility, located in Block 14 offshore Cabinda. 

The workers had been receiving medical treatment in South Africa, according to Angola’s Petroleum and Minerals Ministry. The first died May 24, and the second succumbed to injuries on Tuesday.

The fire occurred while the platform was undergoing scheduled maintenance. A total of 17 people were injured. Authorities are working to recover a body spotted underwater near the platform, according to the ministry.

The platform is 60 miles (97 kilometers) off Angola’s coast. Chevron’s local unit is coordinating with officials and offering support to affected staff and families, the ministry said.
