Oil States launches GeoLok™ technology to enhance geothermal well integrity
OSI Renewables, part of the Oil States portfolio, today announced GeoLok™, a high-temperature geothermal wellhead with an integrated tensioning system. The technology improves geothermal well integrity, reduces operational costs, and enhances geothermal energy production.
"GeoLok leverages field-proven oil and gas technology to solve the inherent challenges encountered in conventional high-temperature geothermal applications,” commented Zander McDougall, Renewables Business Manager. “GeoLok minimizes maintenance, cementing and casing costs to better manage wellhead fatigue."
With a traditional geothermal approach, placement is often inhibited by thermal profiles and retarder requirements. Additionally, such wells use reverse cementing which is prone to void creation and relies on expensive increased casing weights for greater wall thickness to manage elastic collapse. GeoLok decreases casing requirements and employs a ‘cut and pull’ approach that reduces material costs, heat loss and cementing voids to ultimately lower geothermal well downtime and operating expenses.
GeoLok maintains an open annulus to ensure continuous monitoring. Rate of change alarms communicate well health 24/7, empowering crews to initiate immediate shutdowns and intervention if necessary. The system rapidly detects corrosion to provide greater protection for shallow aquifers.
Geothermal operators can experience improved thermal and operational performance, as GeoLok boosts thermal energy output and overall project efficiency.
