Kongsberg introduces new UUC PM thruster sizes to boost offshore vessel performance

December 15, 2025

Kongsberg Maritime has broadened its UUC PM azimuth thruster portfolio with the introduction of two new sizes designed to deliver higher thrust and improved efficiency for offshore and marine applications. The latest additions to the UUC PM 405 model feature 3.8-m and 4.1-m propeller diameters, providing 86 t and 91 t of thrust, respectively.

The expansion comes as offshore operators continue to demand propulsion systems with greater power density, reduced footprint, and simplified maintenance requirements. The company also confirmed plans to extend the range further, with future UUC PM units expected to support propeller diameters up to 5.5 m and power ratings reaching 6,000 kW.

“The introduction of these new sizes reflects our focus on meeting customer needs for flexibility and power in offshore operations,” said Pasi Villanen, Product Manager, Thrusters, Kongsberg Maritime. “Permanent magnet technology allows us to deliver higher thrust in a smaller footprint, which is critical for vessels operating in challenging environments.”

The UUC PM series is designed for underwater mounting and retrieval, allowing operators to change thrusters without drydocking—an approach that reduces downtime and lowers lifecycle maintenance costs. Kongsberg Maritime noted its track record in turnkey underwater thruster change-out campaigns for major drilling customers.

The company’s support model includes storing spare units at key global hubs and providing full maintenance project management. Combined with built-in sensors for real-time condition monitoring, the UUC PM line is positioned to offer improved reliability and availability for offshore support vessels, dynamically positioned rigs, and other high-demand marine assets.
