API launches repair and remanufacture licensing program

January 22, 2025

The American Petroleum Institute (API) today announced the launch of the new API Repair and Remanufacture Program. Organizations that repair or remanufacture products in accordance with designated API standards can become licensed under this program and apply the API Repair and Remanufacture mark to the equipment.

“The new API Repair and Remanufacture Program is an important step in applying consistent standards in repairing and remanufacturing critical safety equipment,” API Senior Vice President of Global Industry Services Anchal Liddar said. “Providing a clear, auditable framework aligns with API’s commitment to advance safety, reliability and sustainability.”

By establishing and maintaining a structured approach to equipment repair and remanufacture, organizations that are licensed under the program ensure that critical equipment adheres to API’s rigorous standards and is restored to service-ready condition. Extending equipment life and reducing resource consumption further supports the industry’s sustainability goals.

Key program requirements and features

Becoming licensed under the API Repair and Remanufacture Program requires two key steps: (1) demonstrating the ability to comply with an API repair and remanufacture standard; and (2) implementing a quality management system in accordance with API Specification Q1, Quality Management System Requirements for Organizations Providing Products for the Petroleum and Natural Gas Industry (now in its 10th edition). The program recognizes organizations that provide repair and remanufacture activities at their own facilities as well as in the field or at customer sites, minimizing downtime and enhancing operational efficiency. All applicants and licensed organizations are subject to annual API audits to ensure continued conformance with program requirements.

While the new API Repair and Remanufacture Program will eventually include various API repair and remanufacture standards, API Standard 16AR, 2nd edition, Repair and Remanufacture of Drill-through Equipment, serves as its first. This edition of the standard covers key processes such as testing, inspection, welding and marking of critical drilling components.
