Oil and gas trade group applauds Supreme Court’s Chevron ruling

(WO) – The American Petroleum Institute (API) released a statement from API Senior Vice President and General Counsel Ryan Meyers on the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the 1984 Chevron precedent.

"We agree with the Court that agency actions must faithfully implement the laws passed by Congress. Today’s decision is a reminder that it’s time for both parties to work together and advance bipartisan, commonsense policies that provide regulatory certainty and secure an affordable, reliable energy future."

On Friday, June 28, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Chevron v. Natural Resources Defense Council, a decades-old legal doctrine that allowed federal regulators to interpret unclear laws.

The Supreme Court said the Chevron decision improperly transferred the power to interpret the law from the judiciary to federal agencies. Under Chevron, judges were required to defer to agencies that offered a reasonable interpretation of an unclear statute.
