UK Energy Minister to speak at upcoming North Sea Investment Forum in London
Petroleum Economist announced that Greg Hands MP, UK minister of state for business, energy, and clean growth, will deliver the ministerial keynote to kick off the North Sea Investment Forum (NSIF) in London on June 23.
The source of the UK’s energy has rarely had a higher profile given global price spikes impacting consumers and the Ukraine crisis bringing security of energy supply sharply into focus. As recently as late last year—in the wake of the UK’s presidency of Cop26 and high-profile environmental and political opposition to permitting of new fields such as Cambo and Jackdaw—there was speculation that the administration of prime minister Boris Johnson might come out against allowing the development of new North Sea oil and gas.
But April’s energy security strategy represented a decisive swing to backing the North Sea’s potential to deliver both the domestic oil and gas that will meet residual hydrocarbon demand during the energy transition and the new cleaner energy that will take the UK to its net-zero future. So, there has never been a better time to hear from a UK energy minister on how his government sees the future of the basin.
The NSIF will tackle all the hot-button issues facing the UK continental shelf (UKCS) as a mature oil and gas province facing the low-carbon journey. Delegates will debate the impact of the new emphasis on energy security; how to reduce the carbon footprint of UKCS production; how to add value to portfolios in the basin; the impact of ESG concerns on capital availability; and how different types of capital such as equity, debt, trade finance and private finance might view the basin differently, among many other talking points.
Alongside Mr. Hands, Petroleum Economist is looking forward to welcoming, among an
