Fulkrum celebrates successful launch of Legal Intern Program

August 19, 2025

Fulkrum has announced the successful launch of its Legal Intern Program, a new initiative developed in partnership with the University of Southampton Global Legal Clinic. The program offers two law students a five-week placement with Fulkrum’s internal legal and compliance teams, providing them with invaluable, real-world experience and an opportunity to apply their academic knowledge in a dynamic business environment.

The Legal Intern Program is designed to give aspiring lawyers hands-on exposure to legal operations within the energy and inspection services industry. Interns work directly alongside experienced teams, contributing to live projects that encompass everything from contract review and compliance to corporate social responsibility (CSR) and stakeholder engagement.

This summer, Maddy Nicholl, one of the program’s inaugural interns, made an extraordinary impact during her placement. Her contributions included assisting with commercial contract reviews, supporting the company’s CSR efforts, and notably, drafting and advancing Fulkrum’s commitment to the Armed Forces Covenant. Thanks to her efforts, Fulkrum officially became a signatory, pledging to support current and former members of the UK armed forces and their families.

“We are proud to sign the Armed Forces Covenant and to reaffirm our commitment to being an inclusive and socially responsible employer," commented Global Vice President of Fulkrum, Brock Falkenhagen. "Maddy played a key part in making this happen, and her initiative perfectly reflects the values we aim to nurture through the Legal Intern Program.”

Maddy’s efforts have not gone unnoticed. She was recently honored with the 'Best Contribution by an Individual Student' award at the prestigious LawWorks and Attorney General Student Pro Bono Awards. The award recognises her more than 350 hours of pro bono work, which includes helping to launch the University of Southampton Global Legal Clinic and conducting impactful legal research aimed at preventing river pollution alongside her work with Fulkrum.

“The Fulkrum internship was transformative," said Nicholl, reflecting on the experience. "It gave me practical legal experience I couldn’t have gained in the classroom, and the chance to make a real difference. I’m especially proud of helping Fulkrum sign the Armed Forces Covenant, it’s been incredibly rewarding to contribute to something that supports veterans and military families.”

“Partnerships like the one with Fulkrum are essential for preparing students for the realities of legal practice. Maddy’s success is a testament to her talent and drive, and to what’s possible when academia and industry collaborate meaningfully,” added Dr. Omar Madhloom, Director of the Legal Clinic and Pro Bono at the University of Southampton.

Fulkrum plans to continue and expand the Legal Intern Program in future cycles, providing even more students with the chance to gain hands-on legal experience in an industry setting.
