Industry innovations honored at 2014 World Oil Awards
HOUSTON – In its thirteenth year of honoring the upstream energy industry's top innovators and innovations, World Oil announced the winners of its 2014 World Oil Awards during a black tie gala in Houston.
This year's honorees took home trophies in 16 categories, covering areas as diverse as drilling and data management. The evening's Master of Ceremony was Shara Fryer, Morning News Anchor, KTRH. And the ceremony began with a keynote speech on ethics from James Pappas, President of the Ultra-Deepwater Programs for RPSEA, the Research Partnership to Secure Energy for America.
Standing apart from the technology and program award winners were two individuals recognized for their professional service in the industry, Billy Brown, Blackhawk Specialty Tools, LLC, won the ‘Innovative Thinker’ award for his contributions in the pioneering of technologically-advanced tools that enhance safety, improve cementing operations and reduce rig time.
In the ‘Lifetime Achievement’ category, petrophysicist John Quirein, of Halliburton, was honored for being a key player in the introduction of numerous interpretation software programs and services that have changed the landscape of classic petrophysical and unconventional resource evaluation.
In addition, the World Oil Awards also recognized the work of the University of North Dakota, College of Engineering and Mines, with a donation. The vision of the university’s petroleum engineering program is to educate future generations of petroleum engineers who can contribute to building a better world through professional service and research for safe, reliable, and affordable energy production and environmental protection. In just two years the programs has grown from four students to an estimated enrollment of well over 300 for Fall 2014.
