The Gas Technology Institute (GTI) awarded George P. Mitchell, former Chairman of Mitchell Energy & Development Corp., a Lifetime Achievement Award for pioneering drilling and completion technologies that created the shale gas revolution.

The Gas Technology Institute (GTI) awarded George P. Mitchell, former Chairman of Mitchell Energy & Development Corp., a Lifetime Achievement Award for pioneering drilling and completion technologies that created the shale gas revolution. The geologist and petroleum engineer developed technologies for drilling in the Barnett Shale of northern Texas that enabled viable production through the first successful application of the hydraulic fracturing technique to dense shale formations.

The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Aberdeen Section appointed Chris Nussbaum as Chairman. Nussbaum succeeds former Chairman Jeb Tyrie. With 25 years of experience in the oil and gas industry, Nussbaum is currently Operations Manager at Seawell’s Well Services Division.

Newpark Drilling Fluids has appointed industry veteran John R. Beltz to the position of Director of Marketing. Beltz has more than 35 years of industry experience. Prior to joining Newpark, he served as VP, Corporate Marketing Communications, for Grant Prideco.

Fotech Solutions, a provider of distributed acoustic data to the energy and security sectors, announced the appointment of Nigel Leggett as COO. He has over 30 years of industry experience, including senior management and technology leadership roles with Schlumberger and British Gas. Most recently, Leggett has been active in private equity investment.

FMC Technologies appointed Johan F. Pfeiffer as VP, Global Surface Wellhead. He began his career with FMC Technologies in 1993, becoming Director of Customer Support for the company’s Subsea Eastern Region operations in 1999. Since 2007 he has served as General Manager, Subsea Eastern Region.

Focus Exploration, a private oil and gas company, named Marc H. Helsinger as VP, Exploration and Business Development. Helsinger has extensive experience in both offshore and onshore projects throughout the Texas and Louisiana Gulf Coast.

Devon Energy Corp. announced the election of the company’s President, John Richels, to the additional position of CEO. Devon’s co-founder and Chairman J. Larry Nichols, who has served as CEO since 1980, will continue with the company as Executive Chairman. Richels has been company President since 2004. Before joining Devon in 1998, he was CFO of Northstar Energy Corp.

BG Group named Chris Finlayson to the position of Executive VP, Europe and Central Asia. He joins the company from Shell, where he most recently held the position of Executive VP, Shell Global Solutions, Upstream.

InterAct, a Houston-based project management and engineering consulting firm specializing in oil and gas production, development and decommissioning services, named Bryant Morris as General Manager for the Gulf Coast Region and Megan Hayes as Business Development Manager. Morris has more than 30 years of experience in onshore and offshore drilling, completion and production operations and management. Hayes was hired at the end of 2009 as the company’s Business Development Manager for the Gulf Coast Region.

Goodrich Petroleum Corp. promoted Jan L. Schott to Senior VP and CFO. During the past three years, she has served as the company’s VP and Controller, as well as Principal Officer.

Dr. William J. Pike, an energy advisor with 43 years of experience in the upstream oil and gas industry, has joined World Oil’s Editorial Advisory Board as Chairman. In this role, he will offer insight and direction for the editorial content of World Oil and will author an industry forecast column for the December issue. The 10-member Advisory Board consists of upstream industry leaders from around the world. Pike is currently a consultant within IBM-owned National Interest Security Company, and works under contract in the National Energy Technology Laboratory, a division of the US Department of Energy. He has worked in the US, Britain, Europe and Russia, serving as an economic and technical advisor to the energy industry and governmental agencies. He has contributed to several books on oil and gas technology and energy economics and has authored technical papers on offshore drilling and production. He is a Life Member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers and Chairperson of the Society’s Energy Information Committee. He sits on the Editorial Advisory Board of Energy Politics, a publication of the University of Dundee School of Law, and is a member of the Independent Petroleum Association of America’s Academy Executive Board. He is a lecturer on energy technology and economics at the Houston Museum of Natural Science. He holds a PhD from the University of Aberdeen for his analysis of the technical development of North Sea oil and gas and its impact on the Scottish economic base.
