Five dead, one missing after fire breaks out on Perenco-operated platform offshore Gabon

(WO) – On Wednesday, March 20, Perenco confirmed that a fire broke out at its Becuna platform in the Simba oil and gas field offshore Gabon. Initial reports indicated that two people were injured and five were missing.

Today, March 21, Perenco unfortunately confirmed the death of five people. One person is reportedly still missing. Emergency teams continue to deploy to search for the missing individual. The Becuna platform fire has been extinguished and the area safely secured, Perenco said in a statement.

The Simba field is a conventional shallow water oil field offshore Gabon operated by Perenco. According to OffshoreTechnology.com, the Simba field reached peak production in 2022, with nearly 33% of its recoverable resources already recovered. The field is responsible for roughly 4% of Gabon’s daily production.
